Alex never saw it coming. One day, he was a content writer at a marketing agency in San Diego; the next, he was laid off. Just like that, his steady paycheck was gone. Panic set in. Bills didn’t pause for unemployment. The job market felt like an uphill battle, and rejection emails chipped away at his confidence. Would he ever find something better?

Instead of spiraling, Alex made the bold decision to level up. He took courses, reconnected with industry peers, and sought advice from professionals in his dream role. When it came time to apply for jobs, he didn’t settle for one or two—he went all in.

It worked. After a month, the first offer came in. Then another. And another. By the end of the week, he had five job offers on the table. His success wasn’t luck—it was strategy. Now, we’re breaking down exactly how you can do the same.

Level Up Your Skills to Be Relevant

Upskilling is the fastest way to position yourself for a better job. According to research by Gallup-Amazon, 65% of employees said that upskilling opportunities by their employers were important for their careers. In today’s digital world, roles are constantly evolving and the nature of jobs is changing. The advent of AI has led to the need for AI-centric roles. Staying abreast of these updates, and developing your professional, transferable skills are the most important ways to ensure you’re not being left behind.

Alex says that if you’re a content writer like him, an additional skill to have is SEO writing; another skill that’s relevant in this field is content marketing. Employers will rather hire a writer who is versed in SEO Best practices and content marketing strategies over one who is not. You can take relevant courses and certifications on platforms like LinkedIn, Coursera and Udemy.

Upskilling is a profound investment that will yield fantastic results for your career so, you must be radical about putting in the mental and physical efforts required. Also note that upskilling, as with any other growth process, takes time so ensure that you do not put yourself under undue pressure.

Optimize Your Resume for Maximum Impact

Have you ever heard of the 7-second rule for resumes? Alex tells us that he never knew about it but once he did, everything he knew about resume building changed. The rule says that recruiters spend an average of seven seconds assessing a resume. Only seven seconds!

Therefore,  a resume that captures a recruiter’s attention should be simple, clear and well-structured. No prevaricating.

Applications are the most important part of the job hunting process. You may not even know it but there are some resume mistakes costing you interviews. For example, being too generic and not tailoring your resume to the company and role you’re applying for.

Crush the Interview

Now, if your resume lands you an interview, congratulations! This is your opportunity to really differentiate yourself from other candidates. It’s your chance to show yourself beyond the words on a piece of paper. Let the recruiters see your personality and your passion.

Preparing for interviews isn’t just about memorizing answers. It’s about anticipating the questions the hiring team will ask.

Interview Preparation Tips

  • Research the company and the role you’re applying to; this provides you with richer information on the company’s expectations.
  • Find out more about your employer/ hiring team. This helps to know topics they are interested in— and highlighting them during the interview will help you stand out.
  • Practice mock questions and prepare thoughtful, well-researched answers.
  • Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. The more you practice, the more confident you feel.
  • Follow up after the interview. This is as easy as sending a thank you note to the panel hours after the interview.
  1.  The Power of Networking:

Networking is the quickest way to get your foot in the door. “Many jobs aren’t even posted online,” Alex says. Therefore, it is important to learn how to build relationships that can get you hired. One of his five job offers came from a recruiter he’d connected with on LinkedIn.

Tips for networking

  • Build relationships across board. Aim to connect vertically and horizontally (i.e. with peers, superiors, and those in lower positions.)
  • Offer value: While you seek to connect with valuable people, remember that these people are also looking for the same. The best thing you can do is to ensure that you have some sort of value they may be looking for. True networking is simply value exchange.
  • Be genuinely interested: It’s easy to tell when someone is genuinely interested in you. Show your sincerity by highlighting subjects the other person is interested in or even personal experiences they have shared in the past. Ensure you link it to your own experiences too. For example, the person posted a picture of their skydiving experience, great! Link that to your last skydiving experience during summer last year!

Turn In Multiple Applications

It’s a number’s game. The quality of your applications matters as much as the quantity you send out. Alex says he applied to over 200 roles and you can do so (and more) with Lightforth Auto apply.
